Nursing Transfer Pathways
The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing offers two bachelor’s pathways for transfer-oriented students. Each has its own admission requirements, prerequisite coursework, and application process — use the links below each overview for current, authoritative details from the School of Nursing.
Accelerated B.S.N.
The Accelerated B.S.N. is the entry pathway for students who are not already registered nurses and want initial preparation for professional nursing practice. The program is completed over four consecutive semesters (about 16 months) and totals 65 semester credit hours, taught in a mix of classroom and online formats. Students living outside El Paso should plan to relocate for the duration of the program.
R.N. to B.S.N.
The R.N. to B.S.N. is a completion pathway designed for licensed registered nurses and eligible associate-degree nursing students. This 30-hour program is conducted entirely through web-based instruction in seven-week minimesters, and can be completed in as little as three terms full time or four terms part time.
Admission requirements and prerequisite coursework change periodically. The pages linked above are the School of Nursing’s official, current source — refer to them directly rather than to any other listing of these requirements.
Options for Completing Prerequisites
Second-degree students, nontraditional students, and students not currently enrolled at a college or university may need a flexible way to complete prerequisite coursework before applying. The self-paced and credit-by-exam options below may be helpful:
- Portage Learning — 100% online, self-directed courses; official credit and transcripts are issued through partner institutions Geneva College or Bushnell University.
- West Texas A&M University Self-Paced Courses — register anytime and take one to six months to complete a course for university credit.
- Texas Tech University Self-Paced Courses — open enrollment, available year-round, with up to six months to complete; not available to actively enrolled TTU students.
- Modern States — free online courses covering freshman-level content, with free CLEP exam vouchers for learners who complete a course.
- DANTES — funded CLEP and DSST exams for eligible military-affiliated students, one funded attempt per exam title.
