If you are interested in pursuing a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship after residency, the Integrated Adult and Child Psychiatry Pathway at Texas Tech Health El Paso offers a streamlined approach to achieving your career goals. This specialized track allows you to complete an adult psychiatry residency and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship within five years.

  • Efficient application process: Apply once through ERAS for both the residency and fellowship. Indicate your intent to pursue this pathway during your general psychiatry residency application.
  • Early specialization: Begin integrating child and adolescent psychiatry care during your second year of residency.
  • Tailored rotations: Complete up to two months of primary care requirements in pediatrics, with opportunities for child psychiatry experiences.
  • Mentorship and research opportunities: Collaborate with established mentors to explore projects in your areas of interest.

Sample Training Schedule

The schedule below provides an example of how adult psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training may be integrated across five postgraduate years.

PGY-1

  • 2 months: General pediatrics and/or pediatric emergency medicine
  • 5 months: Inpatient psychiatry
  • 2 months: Neurology
  • 1 month: Emergency psychiatry
  • 2 months: Internal medicine and/or family medicine

PGY-2

  • 1 month: Child and adolescent consultation-liaison psychiatry
  • 2 months: Texas Child Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) and/or Rural Telemedicine for Youth (RTY) clinics
  • 6 months: Adult consultation-liaison psychiatry
  • 3 months: Emergency psychiatry

PGY-3

Elective time: One-half day per week for research or clinical interests.

  • El Paso Child Guidance Center Trauma-Informed Continuity Clinic
  • Emergence Health Network Young Adult Psychosis Clinic
  • Ysleta School District Comprehensive Care Clinic
  • Outpatient psychiatry at Texas Tech, including geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine
  • Psychotherapy clinic
  • Outpatient clinic at the VA hospital

PGY-4 and PGY-5

Full-time focus on the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship.
