Surgical and Obstetrical Simulation Curriculum

Our surgical simulation curriculum is designed to equip residents with advanced gynecologic and obstetric skills through state-of-the-art training tools and facilities. By integrating hands-on simulation into the routine didactic curriculum, we ensure residents gain the proficiency needed to excel in complex surgical procedures and emergency situations.

 

Gynecologic Simulation Training

Residents develop expertise in procedures such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and cystoscopy. Training is conducted using both low- and high-fidelity simulators at our simulation center, addressing the challenges posed by limited work hours and exposure to complex operative cases.

Key elements include:

• Laparoscopic Skills Training:

  • Involves regular practice on inanimate trainers and high-fidelity simulators.
  • Enhances surgical performance for procedures like laparoscopic hysterectomy and ovarian cystectomy.
  • Training is supported by a resident-maintained practice facility within the clinic building and complemented by advanced sessions.

• Integrated Skills Curriculum:

  • Incorporates surgical simulations into routine didactic sessions.
  • Focuses on mastering the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery and complex laparoscopic techniques.

 

Partnership with TECHS Center

Our collaboration with the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS) provides residents access to cutting-edge resources:

• Multimedia-equipped rooms, videotaped exam spaces, and simulated operating environments.
• High-fidelity gynecologic mannequins and surgical simulators.
• Training in specific skills such as:
  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Operative hysteroscopy
  • Effective communication (e.g., delivering bad news and obtaining informed consent)

The TECHS center offers a dynamic, immersive learning experience that is an invaluable asset to our program.

 

Obstetrical Emergency Training

Obstetrical simulations are conducted at the Emergency Department Regional Simulation and Training Center and on-site in the labor and delivery unit.

• Mock Drills:
  • Use of the Noelle simulator in an unoccupied labor room.
  • Spontaneous drills during quieter periods to simulate real-life scenarios.
• Team-Based Practice:
  • Focuses on enhancing team communication, emergency response, and efficiency in critical situations.
  • Prepares teams to function seamlessly, akin to a highly coordinated "pit crew."
