Dr. Aung is a tenured professor of internal medicine and serves as the vice president for faculty success at Texas Tech Health El Paso. In this leadership role, he oversees institutional initiatives that support faculty recruitment, professional development, advancement, engagement, wellness, mentorship, continuing education and faculty academic success across the health sciences center.
Dr. Aung earned his medical degree from Rangoon University Medical College in Burma. He completed his residency training at Temple University School of Medicine/St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he was selected to serve as the chief medical resident. In addition to his medical degree, he earned a Master’s of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is board certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the National Board of Public Health Examiners. Dr. Aung was awarded the distinguished designation of Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP), one of the highest honors bestowed by the American College of Physicians, in recognition of his longstanding excellence and contributions to internal medicine, medical education, leadership, and service to the profession. The MACP designation recognizes physicians who have demonstrated exemplary integrity, scholarship, clinical competence, and commitment to advancing the field of internal medicine.
At Texas Tech Health El Paso, Dr. Aung is a member of the President’s Executive Committee and chairs the Foster School of Medicine Committee on Faculty Appointment, Promotion, Tenure and Comprehensive Performance Appraisal and has played an integral role in executive leadership recruitment and faculty governance . He provides executive oversight for the health sciences center’s Office of Faculty Affairs, the Office of Faculty Development and the Office of Continuing Professional Education. He has led multiple successful institutional accreditations, including those from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME, American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), and most recently, Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.
Nationally, Dr. Aung has been actively involved in advancing faculty affairs, medical education, and assessment. He is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) and previously served on the GFA Research and Scholarship Committee. He also chaired the Texas Consortium for Faculty Success, a collaborative initiative focused on promoting faculty development, well-being, and success at academic health institutions in Texas.
Dr. Aung is widely recognized for his expertise in evidence-based medicine, clinical epidemiology, and biostatistics. His scholarly and national service activities have focused on the integration of evidence-based principles into medical education, physician assessment, and clinical decision-making. Reflecting this expertise, he currently serves on the National Board of Medical Examiners’ Interdisciplinary Review Committee for Evidence-Based Medicine and the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Test Materials Development Committee. He has also contributed to the development of national licensure and assessment examinations through his service on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 3 Clinical Case Simulation Test Materials Development Committee and the Scientific Abstracts Test Materials Development Committee.
A recognized educator and mentor, Dr. Aung previously chaired the UpToDate® Review Leadership Committee of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). He was honored by the SGIM Women and Medicine Task Force for its Career Advising Program. In organized medicine, he served as the president of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians (TXACP) Services and currently serves on the TXACP Foundation board of directors.
Throughout his career, Dr. Aung has remained committed to fostering academic excellence, advancing interprofessional education, supporting faculty achievement, and mentoring the next generation of academic health professionals and academic leaders.
