Visiting Medical Student Subinternship

For the 2025 - 2026 Academic Year, Texas Tech Health El Paso will participate in the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system.

Visiting medical students receive a comprehensive educational experience designed to mirror the responsibilities of a first-year orthopaedic surgery resident. During the rotation, students gain exposure to trauma, sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, adult reconstruction, orthopaedic oncology, and hand surgery.

Clinical experiences take place at University Medical Center of El Paso (the region’s only Level I Trauma Center), El Paso Children’s Hospital, William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, and additional affiliated hospitals throughout the region.

Students are encouraged to participate fully in resident academics, wellness activities, journal clubs, and program events. Daily responsibilities include inpatient rounds, operative cases, and outpatient clinics, with opportunities to shadow residents during overnight call.

At the conclusion of the rotation, visiting students present a 10- to 15-minute educational presentation during the department’s academic conference.

We encourage you to explore our Residency website, including our Living in El Paso, Frequently Asked Questions, News and Updates, and social media pages to learn more about our program. We look forward to welcoming you to Texas Tech Health El Paso.

Preferred Dates

Sub-internship electives are available from June 2025 through April 2026. If you plan to apply to our residency program, we recommend completing your rotation before November whenever possible. An audition rotation is not required to receive an interview invitation.
