Southwest Coalition for Colorectal Cancer Screening (SuCCCeS)

Against Colorectal Cancer in Our Neighborhoods @ Texas Tech Health El Paso
Southwest Coalition for Colon Cancer Screening

Background

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and Texas. Colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates among Hispanics are higher in El Paso County than in the rest of Texas. However, colorectal cancer is preventable with screening, and screening reduces deaths from colorectal cancer. Data from 2017 reveal that the colorectal cancer screening rate in El Paso County is 54%, significantly lower than both the Texas average of 63.5% and the national average of 67%.

Overview of Program

The Southwest Coalition for Colorectal Cancer Screening (SuCCCeS) program, formerly known as ACCION (Against Colorectal Cancer In Our Neighborhoods), is a program designed to reduce the rates of colorectal cancer in El Paso County through education. The goal of SuCCCeS is to improve screening rates among uninsured and underinsured 45- to 75-year-olds in a Hispanic-majority community who are not up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening. Key components of the program are evidence-based educational intervention, navigation services, and no-cost screening and diagnostic testing.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants must be 45 to 75 years old, uninsured/underinsured, and not up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening, and must have a Texas address. Exclusion criteria include past history of colorectal cancer and blood in the stool.

Funding

This program has been funded by various Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) grants since 2011. The program covers a 27-county area spanning El Paso County, Hudspeth County, and West Texas.
